High School Dance Intensive

Fine + Applied Arts Summer Intensive 2014: June 21 - 28

The Fine + Applied Arts (FAA) Summer Intensive is an immersive, week-long program. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and some after-class studio work is also required so that assignments can be developed and completed. A daily lunch break and evening activities are included. The FAA Summer Intensive concludes on June 28 with an open house showcasing all work for families and participants.

Each student selects one major and one minor for the program. Including the related evening activities and individual studio work, courses for the major take up approximately 50 hours of the week, and courses for the minor cover about 20 hours.

MAJORS

Acting
Students participate in rigorous acting, voice and speech, movement, and scene study classes to learn the art of acting for the stage. During the two-week program, teens refine and perform audition pieces and theatrical scenes that are showcased at the open house.

Dance
Students will be immersed in intense technical training in modern dance and ballet. Additional styles such as hip-hop, jazz, or capoeira (a Brazilian martial art/dance form) will also be woven into the curriculum. Teens will join the faculty and students of one of the strongest and oldest dance programs. A challenging modern dance piece choreographed by a summer faculty member will be rehearsed and performed at the open house.

Design
In this course, teens complete a series of graphic design, industrial design, and landscape design projects. They are introduced to the diverse career choices for designers and gain experience in creative problem solving. The final projects are displayed at the open house.

Drawing and Painting
Teens create and develop two-dimensional images with a variety of techniques and media including paint, charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, and nontraditional media. Students work with subject matter that addresses the human figure, still life, portraiture, nature, and architecture. Appropriate assignments are given to strengthen individual portfolios while sketchbooks are developed. Students’ images are displayed at the open house.

MINORS

Architectural Drawing
This technical hand drawing course explores the basic understanding of space and architecture and is aimed at teens interested in a career in architecture or curious about the discipline. Throughout the two weeks, students will develop fundamental drawing skills and learn to employ the most appropriate medium for illustrating specific architectural ideas. The course will cover drawing types including plans, elevations, sections, details, axonometric renderings, perspectives, and collages. Individual projects are displayed at the open house.

Art Appreciation
Unlike a traditional art history course that focuses the study of art by period, theme, or artist, this course emphasizes techniques for looking at (and enjoying) art. The impressive collection in the Krannert Art Museum is used to develop, broaden, and deepen participants’ understanding of art. Teens also tour area galleries and hear from graduate students about their work.

Ceramics
This workshop explores historical and contemporary approaches to design, hand-building techniques, and decorating processes involved in creating ceramic wall tiles. Students work with different relief formats and experiment with tiles as modular units in repeating patterns and imagery. The workshop places special emphasis on layering colored slips and underglazes, low-fire glaze trailing, and resist and simple transfer techniques. After you explore basic forming and finishing techniques, you will pursue your own creative ideas. Bring sketchbooks and imagery for inspiration. Tiles are displayed at the open house.

Metals
Cast a ring, set a gemstone, and link a chain. In this two-week jewelry and metals course, students make a cuttlefish mold to cast a silver ring, use tabbed construction to set a cabochon gemstone in copper, learn to fuse fine silver, and make a flexible loop-in-loop chain. Completed projects are displayed at the open house.

Musical Theatre Dance Styles
Students will experience a variety of dance forms that are key to musical theatre—including jazz, tap, and hip-hop—and will learn technical training concepts that apply to all styles of dance.

New Media
Using digital imagery, interactive media, and time-based applications, students practice different approaches to successful storytelling.

Photography
In this survey of digital photography, teens study digital SLR cameras and how they function, use Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance photographs, and work in a state-of-the-art lighting studio to make some portfolio-worthy images. If you’ve ever wanted to know how photographers get those great images, then this is the course for you.

Stage Arts
A stage production can involve a huge number of props. Each one may reflect a particular time period, have a specific color, be constructed from a certain material, or fall within a limited range of sizes. Given the additional special requirements of each script, designer, and director, selecting these props can be an extremely challenging and highly rewarding job. Explore what it takes to be a successful props designer!

Urban Planning
Do you play SimCity? Have you ever wondered what really goes into planning a city? This course provides a virtual planning internship, complete with interviews, collaborative working sessions, and tough decision making. The hands-on class gives teens the opportunity to explore community interactions, identify planning and environmental challenges, and propose solutions while using the latest technologies to aid in the development of strategies to help make a city better.

Yoga/Body-Mind Practices
This course takes students on a journey to cultivate self-awareness and healthy movement habits through a daily practice of yoga and an introduction to other body-mind practices that enhance the ability to listen and gain a greater sense of self. Take advantage of a chance to develop lifelong strategies for stress management and practices that can be applied to any form of movement.

OPEN HOUSE AND SHOWCASE
On June 28, students showcase their talents for visiting family from 10 a.m. to noon. Visitors and participants may also take a campus tour.

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

Portfolio Counseling
Students are encouraged to bring their portfolios for informal feedback from Summer Intensive instructors and FAA faculty members.

Audition Tips
Theatre and dance faculty members will offer seminars focused on audition tips.

INSTRUCTION

Current FAA faculty members, graduate students, and recent FAA graduates will teach all major and minor courses. These enthusiastic artists and educators are dedicated to providing a profoundly satisfying experience that represents what it’s like to live, work, and study at FAA.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must have completed their freshman, sophomore, or junior year of high school by summer 2014. Teens at all ability levels are invited to apply.

PLACEMENT

Early application to the program is encouraged, as students are placed on a first-come, first-served basis. Although every effort will be made to assign applicants to their first or second choice of majors and minors, placements cannot be guaranteed.

HOUSING AND MEALS

Students staying on campus during the FAA Summer Intensive spend the week in shared rooms in University of Illinois residence halls. Each room is furnished with beds, desks, and dressers. Students must provide their own linens and will have access to laundry facilities. Housing is staffed and supervised by resident advisors and FAA Summer Intensive counselors. Resident advisors are currently enrolled University of Illinois students trained in community building, problem solving, and emergency procedures.

Those staying in the residence halls are automatically enrolled in a plan that includes three meals per day served in the dining halls. Commuter students are automatically enrolled in a Monday-Friday lunch-only meal plan.

A nightly curfew of 10 p.m. is strictly enforced. All students must report back to their residence halls at this time.

FEES

  • Program deposit with application: $50 (nonrefundable)
  • Residential program fee: $650 (includes instruction, housing, and meals)
  • Commuter program fee: $450 (includes instruction and lunch Monday-Friday)

Course Supplies
Upon acceptance, each student will receive a course supply list. Supply expenses vary widely by course.

Spending Money
Though it’s not required, a student may enjoy having access to $150 in spending money for the week on campus.

Course Supply Scholarships
Assistance for course supply fees is available for teens with documented financial need. Individual award amounts will be based on course selections and the associated fees. An interested student should mention this scholarship in the application essay and include a letter from a parent or guardian detailing the financial need. The deadline to be considered for a course supply scholarship is April 1, 2014.

APPLYING TO THE FAA SUMMER INTENSIVE

1. Apply online and submit the $50 application fee no later than April 15, 2014.

2. Send an essay detailing your interest in the program and a recommendation letter from a teacher no later than April 15, 2014.

3. Send an optional letter from a parent or guardian in support of a course supply scholarship by April 1, 2014.

4. International applicants must prove competency in the English language at the time of application by submitting TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTS scores or a supporting letter from a school counselor or English teacher. [links to more detailed language on secondary page]

5. Applicants will be notified of their admission status on a rolling basis and will be assigned to their majors and minors on a first-come, first-served basis.

6. Submit the program fee no later than May 1, 2014. Any accepted students who have not paid the program fee by May 1 will be dropped from their courses. For convenience, fees may be paid in installments.

REFUND POLICY

All withdrawals must be requested in writing. The postmark date or email date will be honored as the withdrawal date.

  • Withdrawal before May 31, 2014: 50 percent refund minus $50 nonrefundable application fee
  • After May 31, 2014: No refund
