MFA Curriculum

Graduates need 60 hours of graduate level courses (400 level and above) to graduate.

We are currently revising the curriculum. While we await official approval of the new program of study from the Graduate College, MFA students are encouraged to design a program of study with their advisors that generally follows these guidelines:

Physical Practice, 6 hours
Choreographic Process, 6 hours

Teaching Pedagogy, 3 hours

Theory, 4 hours

Contemporary Directions, 4 hours
Career Seminar, 2 hours
Next Phase Material Preparation, 2 hours

Thesis, 8 hours
Courses from outside department, 4 hours

Supervised Teaching, 2 hours
Electives, 18

Electives may include Independent Study, Advanced Research, Screendance, Workshops in Technology, Digital Media, Performance, Physical Practice etc.

Electives may also include courses from outside of department as long as they are on a 400 level. 

Graduate Minor Degrees are available in several other disciplines.  Students are encouraged to discuss the possibility of pursuing a minor with their MFA Advisor.
